Slow Food Germany (SFG) is a global grassroots organization that envisions a world in which all people can access and enjoy food that is good for them; good for those who grow it and good for the planet. A non-profit member-supported association, Slow Food was founded in 1989 to counter the rise of fast food and fast life, the disappearance of local food traditions and to encourage people to be aware about the food they eat, where it comes from, how it tastes and how our food choices affect the rest of the
world. Slow Food believes that everyone has a fundamental right to the pleasure of quality food, and consequently the responsibility to protect the heritage of biodiversity, culture and knowledge that make this pleasure possible. Slow Food involves over a million of people dedicated to and passionate about good, clean and fair food. This includes chefs, youth, activists, farmers, fishers, experts and academics in over 160 countries; a network of around 100,000 Slow Food members linked to 1,500 local chapters
worldwide (known as convivia), contributing through their membership fee, as well as the events and campaigns they organize; and over 2,400 Terra Madre food communities who practice small-scale and sustainable production of quality food around the world.

Slow Food also maintains the “Ark of Taste”, which is an international catalogue of endangered heritage foods. The Ark is designed to preserve at-risk foods that are sustainably produced, unique in taste, and part of a distinct ecoregion.

Slow Food Germany (SFG) in particular is a registered society with currently over 13.500 individual members organised in 85 local convivia. Furthermore, 1400 official “supporters” (local stakeholders such as farmers, producers and restaurateurs) sponsor the work of Slow Food Germany – in March 2016, the organisation reached via radio-, TV and newspapers 11.5 Million people in the German speaking countries.
